Birdwatching
See colorful macaws !
The open views above the canopy offer the possibility to observe macaws, parrots, toucans, aracaris but also monkeys for longer periods. The bigger macaws, like the Blue-and-Yellow, Red-and-Green and Scarlet, are usually seen in pairs or groups of three birds (pairs with their young ones).
An easy way to watch birds !
The easy way to enjoy birdwatching is with a small canoe drifting down the river after an early morning departure from the lodge. This provides clear views of the gallery forest and the rich vegetation on the banks. During one of these trips we observed 75 species in one single day.
Look at all these kingfishers !
Along the banks of the Yuturi river five species of kingfishers can be found. The most impressive one is the crow-sized Ringed Kingfisher.
What is a Potoo ??
One of these species is the Common Potoo. This remarkable bird perches itself on the top of a broken palm trunk. Due to its gray and brown colors it is hardly recognizable as a bird and looks just like another top of a tree trunk.
Meet the noisy Hoatzin !
In the early morning the Hoatzins and Speckled Chachalacas clearly compete for the most noisy-bird-of-the-year award at Cariyuturi.
What about flycatchers ?
Although about 25 species of flycatchers can be seen in the Yuturi area, the trails do not offer very easiest possibilities to spot them. Clearly the boat trips on the rivers and lakes offer much better opportunities to see these beautiful birds.
This is not just a “green wall” !!
At first a walk inside this rainforest might look like your walking along a “green wall”. But soon the more attentive observer will discover plants with colorful flowers, which attract all kinds of insects.
Not only annoying insects !!
Inside the rainforest it cannot be denied that at times there seems to be an overwhelming number of annoying insects, like mosquitoes, ants and ticks. However, flowering plants very often attract colorful butterflies and moths.
Camp to see more birds !
For keen birdwatchers it is recommended to camp one night on the island. At dawn these bird species can be most easily seen.
Birds along the Rio Napo
Although the Rio Napo itself is clearly not the main attraction to go to Yuturi, this large river with its extensive sandbanks offers several bird species.
Another interesting lake !
The Huarmiyuturi lake is only a one hour walk from the Yuturi river, but the rich birdlife along the trail and in the swamps usually makes the trip a 2 to 4 hour enterprise.
